A Dynamic academic elaboration on the Art & Science of Hazardous Area Protection

Hazardous Area

An area in which an Explosive Gas Atmosphere is present, or may be expected to be present, in quantities such as to require special precautions for the construction, installation and use of apparatus

Is my Kitchen, with Gas Stoves & Ovens,a Hazardous Area  ?

No !

It is NOT. Presence of GAS stoves and ovens does not make it a Hazardous Area, because of the safety features built in the Gas Stoves , the regulations which are followed in Gas Connection and the low pressure of the gas .

Of course it can be converted into A Hazardous Area by ignoring the basic safety requirements.

Simple presence of  flammable gases, vapors and combustible dusts does not make a Hazardous Area. The quantities or concentrations must be sufficient to present a potential explosion hazard.

Natural gas  is odourless. For easy detection of leaks a special odour  or “Stinker” is added to the Natural Gas, by the GAS UTILITIES, supplied to homes.
